1005 East Roy St. Seattle, WA 98102
The Ten-o-Five (also known as "1005 East Roy") Apartments was built in 1930 by prominent Seattle architect, Frederick William Anhalt, who constructed many distinguished Tudor-style apartments in the early 20th Century, and was named one of the 150 most influential people in Seattle History by the Seattle Times in 2001. His buildings have been referred to as "Castles in Seattle", including The Ten-o-Five, known as his crowning achievement for its design and being Seattle's first apartment building to feature an underground parking garage.
The Ten-o-Five is designed in both French Norman and English Tudor style with three stair towers, one of which spirals to a Cathedral conical roof. The front doors of each apartment face inwards, either onto a small alcove in the staircase or shared landing with one to three other apartments. These design decisions were intended to foster both a sense of privacy for tenants and a sense of community within the building. The separated towers consist of 3 floors and are topped with turreted slate roofs.
The grandest of these towers, feature cast stone details and a spectacular circular stained-glass lantern. In 1978, the City of Seattle designated The Ten-o-Five as a historic landmark property, and it continues to be admired and beloved by the community today!
